Griot Girls Issue 4: Nobody Knows Me Like I Do

A Word from the Griot Girls

"Wear your mask" "Do i need my mask?" "I can't wait to take my mask off?" This past year has given new meaning to these phrases. With the consistent uttering of this work (mask mask, mask), we began to explore what other mask we wear. Where and why do we wear them ? What's under the mask (what is at our center)? When and where do we feel safe enough to take them off?

Inspired by ancestor Paul Lawrence Dunbar's poem "We Wear the Mask" in this issue we determine that underneath all the mask "we are who we are".

Watch our Griot Girls mentor, Sabriaya Shipley, perform her piece "Mammification" inspired by this month's prompt, "We wear the mask".
